Library Catalog: Using the Ingenta Database

Ingenta offers access to citations from over 18,000 English language
periodicals. It allows you to do a keyword search on a topic as well as browse the tables of
contents of the journals in its database. It does not provide the abstracts of journal citations. Ingenta also offers an online fee-based article delivery service and a current awareness alerting service. Choose Ingenta from the Research Databases link on any Library Catalog page. Once you are in the Ingenta database, you will see a search form with a choice of search
methods.

Search Methods:

Name/Author

:
Use this method to retrieve articles written BY a particular person.

Keyword

:
Search by Keyword when you are looking for articles ABOUT a topic or person. The database will search for the word in the title, subtitle, summary or abstract of the article. The search results will provide a citation only. To see the article or read an abstract, you need to locate the journal in a library, a research database that offers full-text, or order the article online (for a fee).

Journal Title

:
Click on this option when you want to search for a specific journal title or when you want to browse a list of titles related to a particular subject. Once the screen displays a title or list of titles, click on the “Journal Issues” button on the left to get a further breakdown of issues of that journal. Clicking on a specific issue will allow you to browse the table of contents for that issue.

Reveal Alert

Ingenta allows you to e-mail one citation at a time free of charge. A fee is charged if you want to subscribe to the more extensive Reveal Alert service. This service delivers the tables of contents from the latest periodical issues directly to your e-mail box on a regular basis (according to a profile you
establish). In addition, your stored search strategies can be automatically run each week against
new articles added to the database, and the results can be e-mailed to you.

Finding a Journal or Full-Text

Journals that are cited in Ingenta may be available at the Harris Library or other Case
libraries. Search by Title in the Library Catalog, check the Journals at the Harris Library web page, and don’t forget to check the Case E-Journal Portal. Any of these methods may lead you to the full-text of the journal you seek.

Ingenta Delivery Service

Ingenta also provides for the delivery of articles based on a fee structure that corresponds to the journal title and length of the article. The cost for delivery is specified for each article in the database and generally ranges from $15.00 to $30.00 for fax delivery.
