Government Information

The United States government is a prolific publisher of both print and electronic resources. Federal, state and local governmental agencies are excellent sources of information on a wide range of subjects. This web page will point you to a selection of government-related websites. You may also want to check out the Statistical Resources section of this site for additional government resources.


National Level

Bureau of Justice Statistics (U.S. Department of Justice)
BJS collects, analyzes, and publishes information and statistics on crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, homicide trends, etc. It also includes links to state and federal law enforcement information. The Key Facts at a Glance section leads you to charts on trends in criminal statistics. The Data for Analysis section links to analyzed data in a spreadsheet format.

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance
The Catalog provides comprehensive access to information on programs and projects administered by Federal departments and agencies, along with details on funding levels. The home page provides information on how to use the catalog, brief descriptions of Federal agencies and pointers for developing and writing grant proposals. The Catalog itself allows you to search by many different criteria including name of agency,applicant eligibility, program deadlines and type of assistance.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
This site provides current reliable information about diseases, treatment, prevention, data and statistics and many other resources. It also points you to information on international travel health concerns, which include topics such as recommended vaccines, and geographic health recommendations. This site also links to many non-Federal organizations

Department of Health & Human Services
The HHS site has a wide variety of topics including child care, fatherhood, Head Start, mental health, teen pregnancy and much more. The News and Information section leads you to fact sheets on departmental initiatives and press releases. Check out the A to Z Index arranged by topic. For example the ” Agencies in HHS” section which connects you to a list of 11 HHS agencies.

Environmental Protection Agency
This site provides a place to browse and obtain detailed information on current environmental topics. As you move through this site you can search for profiles that contains graphs and brief descriptions that summarize existing information on air quality, drinking water systems, surface water quality, hazardous waste, and reported toxic releases. Profiles are available for every state and county by selecting a geographic area or typing in a zip code.

Federal Register
The Federal Register is the official daily publication for Rules, Proposed Rules, and Notices of federal agencies and organizations, as well as Executive Orders and other Presidential documents. This site provides access to the Federal Register for the years 1994 through the current year and can be searched by section or keyword or phrase.

FEDSTATS
FEDSTATS provides access to the full range of statistics produced and reviewed by more than 70 agencies in the United States Federal Government. The information available through this site includes a variety of subjects such as demographics, crime, education, health, etc. You can also view the most frequently requested tables from the Statistical Abstract of the United States. This site can be searched by keywords.

GPO Access
This is the home page of the United States Superintendent of Documents, the primary source of government publications. It provides quick links to the Federal Register, the Congressional Record, and the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations as well as core documents of U.S. Democracy. Clicking on A-Z Resource List takes you to a list of resources that you can search or browse. One of the most useful browsing aids is the Federal Resources by Topic.

National Institutes of Health
This site is a good starting point to search for basic health information resources, as well as health care policy, research, and environmental health science information.

Northwestern University Library Gov Info, Maps, Data
Includes U.S. Government Agency lists broken down by departments and useful links to Social Science Data Services. The International Information links on this site are quite extensive.

THOMAS: Legislative Information on the Internet
THOMAS allows you to search for the text of legislation, as well as the status of bills being considered in Congress. You can also track which representative has sponsored a particular bill. Information on public laws is also included. Updates to this site are made on a daily basis.

USA.gov [Formerly First.gov]
Launched in September 2000 (as First.gov), the purpose of this site is to provide fast and easy web-based access to government information on any topic. Information is organized by topic and by audience. Their search page USASearch.gov allows you to search all government pages, government news, and images and you can view your results by topic, agency, or source. The State and Local Government links, as well as an A-Z Agency Index, are very helpful.

U. S. Census Bureau
Need information about the 2010 Census , then this is the site to visit.. There is also data collected from the 2000 and 1990 census along with accompanying household surveys that supplement the census data. Subjects A-Z at the top of the page allows you to search for statistics by topic. View a selected list of links to specific subsets of the U.S. Census Bureau website that provide information on specific populations or subject areas.

U. S. Dept. of State Background Notes
The U.S. Department of State publishes Background Notes on approximately 170 countries worldwide. These are brief, factual online pamphlets with information on each country’s culture, history, geography, economy, government and current political situation. Some print copies are also available for in-library use in the Government Documents Dept. of Kelvin Smith Library.

University of Michigan Documents Center
This is a comprehensive list of government websites covering foreign, federal, state and local
resources. It also includes links to international agencies. Well-defined categories and brief annotations assist the user in identifying the appropriate government resource for their research needs.

State Level

National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL)
The National Conference of State Legislatures is a bipartisan organization dedicated to serving the lawmakers and staffs of the nation’s 50 states, its commonwealths and territories. The site provides links to all of the state legislatures. Its Issue Areas section leads you to major topics (such as Human Services, Education, Health, Ethics) that are then subdivided into specific issues.

Ohio General Assembly
At this site you can search for information on Ohio laws, acts, and legislation, the Ohio House of Representatives, the Ohio Senate, and Legislative Agencies. You can search by a specific bill number and view both the House and Senate bills full text. This site also will allow you to view the bill text as well as track the bill as it moves through the legislative process.

Ohio Revised Code
This searchable version of the Ohio Revised Code is provided by Lawriter, LLC. It is organized in a book-like interface that includes a table of contents and lists individual sections of text. It
includes all bills passed, filed, and through a specific effective date. Also included is the Ohio Administrative Code which includes all rules final filed by and adopted. Check the website for the specific dates that are included as they are constantly changing.

Produced by the Library of Congress this page provides meta-indexes to government resources at the state and local level. Links to individual state home pages are also included.

Produced by the State Library of Ohio this site provides links to all states and a variety of organizations. This site is searchable by state and/or topic.

State of Ohio Government Information and Services
This is the State of Ohio’s official state government page. It is a resource and statistical source of information on its people, its industry and its economy.
