Encyclopedias and
handbooks provide a summary of topics or subjects and are a useful first stop in
beginning a library research project. They can be used to help narrow the focus of a project or
provide background information on prior research in a particular field. Encyclopedias can be
general in nature, such as the
Encyclopedia Britannica
or specific such as the
Encyclopedia of Mental Health. References at the end of an encyclopedia article or a
chapter in a handbook can also provide information on additional studies on that topic.
The best way to locate handbooks or encyclopedias in a library's catalog is to do a
keyword search
using a term related to your topic in conjunction with one of the above categories (for example,
aging handbook* OR mental encyclopedia). A search using
subject
headings requires you to put the term at the end of the subject. For example:
Mental Health -- Encyclopedias
Social Work -- Yearbooks
Social Sciences -- Handbooks, Manuals, etc.
Management -- Handbooks, Manuals, etc.
Annual Reviews may also be used to obtain background information on a topic since
they summarize trends and research in a particular discipline. Case Western Reserve University
provides online access to several
Annual Reviews in Social Science fields such as Psychology and Sociology. They can be
accessed through the
Research Databases section of the
Library Catalog.
Following is a selected list of print and online encyclopedias and handbooks related to the
social sciences. Clicking on the title of one of the print entries will take you to the Case
Western Reserve University online Library Catalog entry.
