The Louis Stokes Fellowship in Community Development provides full-tuition scholarships and a
travel stipend to students already working in community development, in an intensive weekend
program designed to accommodate work schedules, and foster leadership among African-Americans and
Hispanics in the field of community development.
Second/Third Year Scholarship Opportunities
MSASS faculty, field advisors, and field supervisors nominate students entering their second
and/or third year to receive scholarships. These scholarships are the Alumni Scholarship, Berger
Scholarship, Krislov Scholarship, and the Mandel Scholars Award
Alumni Scholarship
The Alumni Association annually names one or more students to receive the Alumni scholarship.
The student must have:
- a minimum grade point average of 3.5 (verified by MSASS Registrar);
- demonstrated social work knowledge in action;
- demonstrated knowledge of advocacy in field practice and/or as reflected in class assignments
and/or through school/community involvement, i.e. board, committees, etc.;
- completed at least one field period; and
- financial need
Awards range from $1,000 to $2,500
Howard R. Berger Scholarship
The Howard R. Berger Scholarship is available to community development majors through the Jewish
Community Federation (JCF) in honor of Howard Berger, a retired JCF director of community relations
and a 1961 graduate of the (then named) School of Applied Social Sciences (SASS).
Criteria:
- Any full-time, community development majors, entering his or her second year, MSASS master
level or Ph.D. student.
- Must be committed to community organization.
- Special consideration is given to candidates who have shifted their vocational direction and
are pursuing a new and different career path through MSASS.
- Eligibility is based on financial need and merit.
Awards vary but should be at least $1,000.
Norma and Albert Geller Scholarship
This $1,000 scholarship provides scholarship support to students who advocate on behalf of
children and families to prevent physical and emotional abuse. Students demonstrate financial need
and in good academic standing.
Criteria:
- Students must demonstrate high financial need.
- Students must be in good academic standing.
Evelyn Moreida Krislov Scholarship
This fund was established to honor Mrs. Krislov, a 1954 graduate of the (then named) School of
Applied Social Sciences (SASS).
Criteria:
- Students must be pursuing a professional degree in the practice of social work with older
adults.
- Students must be entering their second-year.
- Preference will be given to those who wish to return to their communities following
graduation.
- Eligibility is based on merit and financial need.
Awards will be given to three to five students and range from $1,000 to $3,000
Mandel Scholars Award
The Mandel Foundation has established two scholarships to encourage leadership in the field of
social work. A full tuition scholarship will be given to a new student and to a returning student
enrolled in the Full-time Program, Extended Degree Program, or Intensive Weekend Program
Mandel Scholars are selected based upon the following:
- A 3.5 Grade Point Average.
- Leadership or the potential to assume leadership positions in the field of social work.
- Possible interview by Mandel Scholarship Committee.
