Infant Mental Health is an emerging focus area in early intervention services for children from
birth to six years of age. Young children may be identified as having a mental health concern if
they display one or several of the following characteristics:
- excessive crying and tantruming,
- little or no interest in interacting with adults and children,
- seldom, if ever, comply with what they are asked to do,
- frequently act aggressively toward others such as by hitting or biting,
- act destructively with their own property and environment,
- have difficulty adjusting to changes, transitions or new people,
- seldom respond appropriately when disciplined.
CICF addresses these issues through training at the masters' and doctoral degree levels and by
conducting research on alternative methods for working with parents and other caregivers to address
