The Dr. Semi J. and Ruth W. Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education
The Dr. Semi J. and Ruth W. Begun Center for Violence Prevention, Research and Education is
dedicated to the multidisciplinary study of violence that leads to scientifically based violence
prevention programs and violence prevention policy. The goal of the center is to form
interdisciplinary academic partnerships, promote community-based strategies for violence
prevention, and conduct research/interventions that address the social stressors associated with
youth violence. The Begun Center staff also will focus their efforts on training, advocacy and
technical assistance.

11.4.11 - Violence Prevention Program Receives Award, National Recognition
On Friday, November 4, the Ohio State Bar Foundation recognized the efforts of the Fugitive Safe
Surrender program by naming it the "Outstanding Program for 2010." The program's success is due to
the work of MSASS researchers like Daniel J. Flannery, PhD, director of the Begun Center. Last
fall, the program logged a national record when 7,431 people surrendered in the city of Cleveland.
